1. What this page is for
Chords.fm is a transcription tool for audio you own or have the right to process. We do not host a catalog of songs and we do not distribute uploaded audio to other users. If you nevertheless believe audio you own has been uploaded to Chords.fm without your authorization, this page explains how to send a takedown notice and how we respond.
Consistent with 17 U.S.C. § 512(i)(1)(A), we maintain a policy of terminating, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who are repeat infringers of copyright.
2. Designated agent
Notices under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3) should be sent to our designated agent at dmca@chords.fm.
U.S. Copyright Office designated agent registration: DMCA-1071896.
3. What a valid takedown notice must include
Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3), a notice must include all of the following, or it will be incomplete and we may be unable to act on it:
- A physical or electronic signature of the person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the exclusive right alleged to be infringed.
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed (or, for multiple works at a single site, a representative list).
- Identification of the material claimed to be infringing, with information reasonably sufficient to permit us to locate it. Because audio on Chords.fm is only accessible to the account that uploaded it, please include any identifying information you have — for example, the account email under which the file was uploaded, if known, or the URL of a page where the infringing content was displayed.
- Contact information for you: your address, telephone number, and email address.
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement that the information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the exclusive right alleged to be infringed.
Knowingly submitting a materially false claim may subject you to liability for damages under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f).
4. Counter-notice
If content you uploaded has been removed in response to a takedown notice and you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notification under 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3) to the same address. A valid counter-notice must include:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- Identification of the material that was removed or to which access was disabled, and the location at which the material appeared before it was removed.
- A statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief that the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification.
- Your name, address, and telephone number; and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the judicial district in which your address is located (or, if outside the United States, any judicial district in which Chords.fm may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who provided the takedown notification or their agent.
Knowingly submitting a materially false counter-notice may subject you to liability for damages under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f).
5. How we respond
We review every complete notice. If we remove content in response to a valid notice, we will notify the affected account holder and pass along the counter-notice procedure above. If we receive a valid counter-notice, we will forward it to the original complainant and — unless they file suit within 10 business days — restore the material within 10 to 14 business days.
Accounts that receive multiple valid takedown notices may be terminated under our repeat-infringer policy (§1 above).
