Terms of Service

Last updated: June 9, 2026

1. What Chords.fm is

Chords.fm is a browser-based transcription assistant: you load an audio file in your browser, and the tool lets you loop sections, slow it down, pitch-shift it, isolate stems, and otherwise navigate the recording by ear. The entire tool runs locally in the browser. There’s no account to create, no audio to upload, and nothing about your audio leaves your device.

Chords.fm is a tool, like a tuner or a DAW plug-in. We do not host or distribute a library of songs and we do not serve other users’ audio to you.

2. The audio you load — your representation

When you load audio into Chords.fm, you represent and warrant that:

  • You own the recording, or you have the right — by license, permission, or applicable exception under copyright law (for example, a limited personal / educational fair-use analysis) — to process it through the tool;
  • You are using the resulting analysis (loops, marker positions, EQ settings, etc.) for your own personal, non-commercial study, practice, performance preparation, or educational use, and not to redistribute someone else’s recording;
  • You will not load audio that is unlawful, infringing of third-party rights, or that you have been instructed to stop using.

Audio you load is decoded and processed entirely in your browser. We never see it.

3. Outputs and your rights to them

The output of the tool — markers, loop slots, EQ state — is your own work product, generated locally in your browser from the audio you provided. You may use it for personal study, private practice, and your own educational purposes.

The underlying musical composition (the song itself) may still be subject to copyrights owned by songwriters, publishers, and collecting societies. Nothing in these Terms grants you a license to reproduce, perform publicly, or distribute someone else’s composition.

4. Optional support

All features are free. If you choose to support the project, the “Support” dropdown in the navigation opens Stripe-hosted donation pages outside Chords.fm. That checkout is operated by Stripe; we never receive your payment details and we do not condition any feature on whether you donate.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Load audio you have no right to process, or use Chords.fm to circumvent a rights holder’s technical protection measures;
  • Use Chords.fm to harass, defame, or harm others; to process illegal content; or to violate applicable law;
  • Reverse-engineer the deployed tool beyond what applicable law allows, or republish its outputs in a way that competes with the originating rights-holders.

6. DMCA / copyright complaints

Chords.fm doesn’t host audio, so there’s nothing for us to take down — but if you believe the tool is being misused with material you own, send a notice to dmca@chords.fm. The full procedure (§512(c)(3) notice content, counter-notice procedure under §512(g)(3), and designated- agent details) is at our DMCA policy.

7. Disclaimer

Tempo, pitch, key, and BPM detection are the output of statistical analysis and will contain mistakes. They are provided on an “as-is” basis for study and practice. Chords.fm makes no warranty that the analysis is accurate, complete, or suitable for performance or publication, and disclaims all implied warranties to the fullest extent permitted by law.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Chords.fm’s aggregate liability for claims arising out of or relating to the service is limited to one hundred US dollars ($100). Chords.fm is not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms as the product evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
